The Accra Regional Police Command has intercepted a private ambulance allegedly being used to transport narcotics at Labadi.

Addressing the media on Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Ghana Police Service disclosed that the operation followed sustained surveillance and was carried out the previous day.

The vehicle, a Hyundai Hiace ambulance with registration number GX 277-20, was stopped in front of Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami. Police arrested 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, who was found near the vehicle and claimed ownership of both the ambulance and its contents.

A search of the ambulance uncovered sacks filled with dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. Officers later retrieved 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected substance.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment had been transported from Kpando in the Volta Region to Accra for distribution. Tuanda reportedly admitted to engaging in the illicit trade since 2024.

Police further established that the suspect purchased the Hyundai Hiace as a regular vehicle before fitting it with a siren and branding it as an ambulance.

Before acquiring the Hiace, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar operations. In addition to drug trafficking, the vehicle was occasionally used to transport corpses.

The ambulance has since been impounded, while the suspected drugs are being held as evidence. Samples will be forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing. Meanwhile, Tuanda is being processed for court as investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against using service vehicles for criminal purposes and reaffirmed its determination to clamp down on drug trafficking in the region.
