The Government of Ghana has issued a strong condemnation of the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing the takeover as an unconstitutional act that undermines democratic governance and threatens regional stability.

In a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Ghana said it strongly and unequivocally condemns the coup d’état carried out by elements of the military in Guinea-Bissau, stressing that the incident constitutes “a direct assault on democratic governance.”

According to the statement, the coup disrupts the electoral process that followed the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.

The Government of Ghana expressed deep dissatisfaction with what it called a “brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people,” noting that the action has interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory and stalled the announcement of election results originally scheduled for November 27.

Ghana called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all parties in Guinea-Bissau to respect the democratic process.

It emphasized that any concerns or disputes arising from the elections must be resolved peacefully and through legitimate legal channels.

The statement further demanded the protection of civilians, foreign nationals, and particularly members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in the country. Ensuring their safety and secure passage, Ghana stressed, must be treated as a matter of urgency.

Ghana also appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tensions. It reaffirmed its unwavering support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their efforts to coordinate a regional response in line with established protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.

The government reiterated its commitment to promoting stability and condemning unconstitutional changes of government across the West African sub-region.
