The Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council have dismissed reports of a 20 percent increase in public transport fares purportedly scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
In a joint statement, the two transport bodies described the announcement as unauthorized and not approved through the established processes for reviewing transport fares.
The statement, signed by GPRTU General Secretary Godfred Abulbire and GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, indicated that no discussions had been held with the Ministry of Transport regarding a fare adjustment.
The transport operators stressed that fare reviews require consultations between transport unions and government authorities, a process they said had not taken place.
They consequently urged commuters and the general public to disregard reports of the alleged fare increase, insisting that the current approved fares remain in force.
The two organisations also directed transport unions, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers and other stakeholders to continue charging existing fares until an official review is concluded.
They assured passengers that any future fare adjustment would be announced through the appropriate channels following consultations with the relevant authorities.
The transport operators further reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the interests of both commuters and operators while ensuring fairness and transparency in the determination of transport fares.
