NHIA wants one percent of workers' salary to sustain policy

The National Health Insurance Authority(NHIA), the managers of the health insurance policy has made a humble suggestion to well-meaning Ghanaians to contribute one percent of their annual salary towards the sustenance of the insurance policy in the country.
According to the Director of Corporate Affairs at NHIA Barimah Sarpong, this only a suggestion the mangers of the policy are considering and hoping more and more Ghanaians will buy into the idea to sustain the one time laudable  insurance policy.
He said these are some of the suggestions for the sustenance of the policy highly being considered by the managers of the authoirty.
Barimah Sarpong made this known on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show on Accra-based Happy FM hosted by Kwame Afrifa-Mensah.
He revealed that per the suggestions being considered every employee who earns a little above one thousand Ghana Cedis may have to contribute ten Ghana Cedis for the employer to contribute two percent of the company’s earnings representing twenty Ghana Cedis to support the operations of the authority in ensuring accessible healthcare in the country.
He said among other things the mangers are also considering appealing to the government to tax alcohol and tobacco to help in the treatment of such related diseases in the country.
He minces words to say the government under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is doing its best to ensure moneys meant for the operations of the authority are paid on time.
He explained that because of the overwhelming number of subscribers as well as the levels of participation, the policy is found wanting anytime  the government’s subvention delays.
This has led to the delays in the payment of  service providers across the country he added.
