Former Black Stars player, Prince Polley, has confirmed that there were factions in the team which also contributed to the team’s inability to win the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

This gives credence to the open secret that there were two factions in the team which Polley described as the Accra and Kumasi blog.

According to Prince Polley, there was so much tension in the squad prior to the pre-tournament camping in Portugal. He noted as a result of the tension, the final squad for the tournament had to be named at the airport.

Speaking in an interview on Happy Sports with Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy 98.9FM, “When we left Portugal there was tension in the team. Otto Fister was not able to name the final squad before we left the airport.
It was at the airport we got to know those who will make the squad to Senegal.

He revealed that there were factions as Anthony Yeboah and Abedi Pele had their own camps.

“It is true there was division in the team. Abedi Pele’s camp and that of Anthony Yeboah’s.”

He added that the decision to name Anthony Baffoe as the Black Stars captain who had just joined the team based on the request of Anthony Yeboah was a major factor to the cup loss.

The Black Stars lost the AFCON final to Ivory Coast through penalty shoot-outs.
