Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed allegations that Ghana gained financially from its agreement with the United States to accept certain West African deportees.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, September 15, Mr. Ablakwa clarified: “It is important to state that Ghana has not received any money, compensation or any material benefit in relation to this understanding. Our decision is grounded purely on humanitarian grounds and principle.”
His comments come in response to growing public debate and opposition concerns over the deportation of Nigerian and Gambian nationals to Ghana.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the arrangement was guided strictly by international humanitarian standards, adding that Ghana’s sovereignty and security would not be undermined.
“Our priority remains the safety and dignity of Ghanaians while honouring our obligations within the international community,” he assured.
