Afenyo-Markin: Speaker’s actions undermine judiciary, risk dividing the nation

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed deep concern over recent comments and actions of the Speaker of Parliament, asserting that they undermine the authority of the judiciary and risk sowing division within the country.

Addressing the press on Thursday, November 7, after the Speaker announced the adjournment of Parliament indefinitely for the second time, Afenyo-Markin criticized the Speaker’s approach following a Supreme Court ruling on a contentious matter involving four members of Parliament’, noting that the Speaker’s response has left him questioning the integrity and intentions of the Speaker’s office.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the Speaker’s statements reflect a dangerous disregard for the judiciary. He highlighted that while the Speaker initially submitted to the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction, he later criticized the institution after an unfavorable ruling. This shift in stance, Afenyo-Markin argued, erodes trust in the judicial system and disrespects the rule of law.

The Majority Leader emphasized that the Speaker’s allegations of collusion between the judiciary and the presidency could ignite political instability, especially as the nation prepares for future elections. Afenyo-Markin believes such statements fuel unnecessary controversy, questioning whether the Speaker is attempting to pre-emptively justify similar actions should the opposition lose in subsequent elections.

Afenyo-Markin went further to reflect on the broader implications, stating that although some members of the House believed the Speaker had the ability to unite the country when elected, recent actions have cast doubt on this assumption. He stressed that it is essential for political leaders to display statesmanship, particularly at a time when partisan tensions are high.
