Akunnor to land Black Stars job as gov’t opts for a local coach

Finder Sports understands that the government has communicated to officials of the Ghana Football Association to appoint a local coach in the FA’s quest to appoint a successor to Kwesi Appia for the senior national football team the Black Stars.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a statement released on January 2, 2020, said it had dissolved all the technical teams of the various national teams making the Black Stars head coach position vacant.

Kwesi Appiah who was in charge of the team had to vacate the post upon the expiration of his contract on December 31, 2019, after signing an extension in June 2019 prior to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Finder Sports sources indicate that officials in government (Sports Ministry) have communicated to the GFA that the appointment of a local, competent coach will be the ideal choice of the state largely because the Ministry is not in a financial position to hire a top-notch expatriate trainer seeing as the state still owes Kwesi Appiah.

Information gathered further indicate that the Ghana Football Association have been told explicitly that they will bear all the cost should they defy the government and go-ahead to hire an expatriate coach.

Meanwhile, there are talks ongoing for Charles Kwabla Akunnor to be handed the Black Stars job, according to reports.

C.K Akunnor was drafted into the national team as an assistant coach by Kwesi Appiah ahead of Ghana’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tome.

Akunnor is expected to earn $25,000 should he get the position and will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko.
