The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that its ongoing decongestion exercise will be expanded beyond the Central Business District (CBD) to other parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The month-long operation, which commenced in the CBD on Monday, February 2, seeks to remove traders from pavements and public spaces to ensure the free movement of pedestrians and enhance public safety.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, explained that the exercise is being undertaken in collaboration with other municipal and district assemblies across the region as part of a coordinated enforcement effort.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at ensuring strict adherence to laws governing the use of public spaces.
“We are going to enforce the law, and the law will work. This exercise is comprehensive and will continue at Kaneshie. I am working with my colleagues at Abossey Okai, Ayawaso Central, Labadi and Korley Klottey. We are all working together as a team,” Mr Allotey said.
He emphasised that the decongestion exercise is not limited to Accra Metro alone, noting that operations will be rolled out in several locations in the coming days.
“This is not just an Accra Metropolitan decongestion. Tomorrow we are going to Agbogbloshie, and the next day we will go to Kaneshie,” he added.
