In the early hours of April 29, 2025, an assault at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital in Somanya in the Eastern Region left staff shaken and renewed calls for heightened security measures at the facility.
The attack occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. when Madam Naomi, a revenue officer, was on duty.
According to the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Francisca Darkwah, the armed men, disguised as patients, approached the revenue area pretending to seek medical assistance.
One of the men claimed to need a folder and engaged Madam Naomi when the folder officer was away.
As she attempted to assist, two armed men suddenly appeared, threatening her with knives and demanding money.
Despite their efforts, the attackers discovered only a minimal amount.
During the struggle, Madam Naomi suffered injuries to her face and hand.
Dr. Darkwah disclosed that while this incident marks the first direct attack on the revenue office, the hospital has experienced security threats in the past.
She appealed for immediate intervention, including the installation of surveillance systems and increased police patrols to ensure safety for both staff and patients.
The case has been reported to the police, who have commenced investigations.
