The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for the Bank of Ghana to be protected from political interference, stressing the need to preserve the central bank’s independence and institutional integrity.

He made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Describing the Bank of Ghana as a vital national institution whose mandate impacts every citizen, the Asantehene urged political actors to exercise restraint in their engagements with the central bank.

“This is a unique institution with a mandate that ultimately affects every citizen of this land. Ideally, it should be a fortress, insulated from the strings and arrows of political warfare. We must therefore think carefully before taking any action that could compromise the integrity of the Bank,” he said.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II appealed to both sides of the political divide to grant the Governor and his management team the necessary space, respect and support to perform their professional duties without undue pressure.

“I appeal to the nation and to both sides of the political divide to give the Governor, my son, and his team the opportunity, space and respect to carry out their responsibilities. Support them along the right path. This is our Bank; if it fails, we risk collapse, but if it succeeds, we walk in wealth and glory,” he added.

He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the Bank of Ghana, noting that the institution has the capacity to deliver on its mandate in the interest of national economic stability and sustained growth.
