The Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) has been stripped of its operating license by the Attorney General through the Copyright Office.
The announcement was made today, Thursday, June 1, 2023, during a press conference held by the Directors of GHAMRO at the GNAT Hall in Accra. This decision effectively means that GHAMRO will no longer have the legal authority to collect royalties or carry out its vital functions within Ghana’s music industry.
GHAMRO has largely been recognized as an organization responsible for protecting and administering the rights of music creators, composers, and performers. Its primary role has been to ensure that artists receive fair compensation for the use of their music by collecting royalties from various sources, including radio stations, streaming platforms, and public performances.
However, some Ghanaian artistes have raised worrying concerns over the mandate of the music body with regards to payment of royalties and protecting the rights of music creators.
