Assembly members within the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, voted against President Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Mensah.

The nominee pulled 9 out of 19 votes, falling short of the two- thirds majority required for his confirmation.

Before the election began, tempers flared at the assembly hall, with a tensed atmosphere reflecting sharp divisions among members, with some openly voicing their disapproval of the nomination.

According to reports, verbal clashes erupted between supporters and opponents of the nominee, highlighting deeper political disagreements within the assembly.

The rejection has left the MCE position vacant, delaying critical regional initiatives.

Speaking in an interview after the rejection of the nominee, the Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, appealed to assembly members to reconsider their stance, emphasizing the urgency of confirming the President’s nominee.

“We have a lot of things to do, so we only have to plead with the assembly members to confirm the president’s nominee. They should look at the fact that if they don’t approve, they will come back to you, that is all we are trying to avoid”.
