Ghanaian athlete Aziz Mohammed has etched his name in the history books of national athletics by setting a new U-20 record in the men’s 5000m event. This remarkable feat was achieved during the 2019 U20 Athletics Championship held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Despite the stiff competition, Mohammed’s determination and skill shone through as he secured an impressive 8th place finish with a time of 14:11.26, setting a new national record for Ghana in the U-20 category.

The men’s 5000m final saw fierce competitors from across Africa, with Kenya’s Edward Zakayo Pingua taking the gold with a remarkable time of 13:13.06, followed closely by compatriot Jacob Krop, who finished at 13:14.44. The podium was completed by Reuben Longosiwa, also from Kenya, clocking in at 13:43.46. Despite these formidable opponents, Mohammed’s performance was a standout moment for Ghana, showcasing his resilience and talent on the track.

A Rising Star on the Track

Fast forward to June 2024, and Aziz Mohammed has continued to build on his early promise, emerging as one of Ghana’s brightest talents in middle-distance running. His recent triumph at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships was nothing short of spectacular. He claimed the coveted gold medal in the 1500m, an achievement that solidified his status as a top-tier athlete on the national and collegiate stages.

Not only did Mohammed clinch the national championship title, but he also left his mark on the West Texas A&M track scene. Earlier in the season, he set an impressive personal best by securing second place in the 1500m at a school meet with a time of 3:44 seconds. This performance not only ranked him fourth in the NCAA Division II standings but also made him the second-fastest runner in West Texas A&M’s history for this event.

Dominating the Lone Star Conference

Aziz Mohammed’s success is not confined to a single race or event. At the Lone Star Conference Championships, he demonstrated his versatility and endurance by dominating both the 800m and 1500m races. His outstanding time of 1 minute, 48.4 seconds in the 800m placed him as the third-fastest runner in the history of West Texas University, further cementing his legacy.

The Future of Ghanaian Athletics

As Aziz Mohammed continues to shine on both national and international stages, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes in Ghana and beyond. His record-setting performance in the 5000m and his subsequent achievements in middle-distance events are a testament to his hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. The future looks bright for this young star, who is undoubtedly on track to achieving even greater heights in the world of athletics.
