Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned remarks by Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante Boateng, who recently referred to him as a “stranger” in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and questioned his eligibility to lead the party as flagbearer.
Speaking to party members during his tour of the Oti Region on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia described the comment as divisive and contrary to the NPP’s founding values of inclusiveness and unity.
“Some of my opponents say I am an outsider a stranger who does not deserve to lead this party because of where I come from. This is dangerous, divisive, and completely against the spirit of our unifying tradition,” he said.
The MP’s comment has been widely criticized by the NPP national secretariat, the Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus, and other party groups, who have called for restraint and unity ahead of the flagbearer selection.
Dr. Bawumia reminded members that the NPP’s origins lie in the United Party (UP) a political alliance that brought together diverse ethnic and religious groups across Ghana.
“Those making such claims do not understand our history. The Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition the foundation of the NPP was built by leaders from all major tribes in Ghana. That is the true spirit of our party,” he emphasized.
