Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister for Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong shared a lighthearted exchange at the final funeral rites of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.
In a viral clip from the event, Dr. Bawumia jokingly told Acheampong, “You want to worry me,” sparking speculation about a possible fierce contest for the New Patriotic Party flagbearership ahead of the 2028 elections.
While Dr. Bawumia is widely expected to seek re-election as the NPP’s presidential candidate, Bryan Acheampong has also expressed interest in the position, setting the stage for a competitive race.
Other potential contenders include Kennedy Agyapong, who previously ran against Bawumia in 2023, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong has reiterated his stance on the party’s tradition of prioritizing performance when selecting a flagbearer.
Speaking at Mampong, he emphasized that the NPP does not grant second chances to candidates who fail to deliver, referencing past electoral precedents.
His remarks were perceived as an indirect critique of Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 elections.
