Beware of changed expiry dates on products – FDA warns Xmas shoppers

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has advised Christmas shoppers to be extra vigilant when buying groceries and other packaged food items.

According to him, some unscrupulous persons have resorted to the re-packaging and re-labelling of goods, especially expired ones and selling them to unsuspecting buyers.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the FDA, James Larbi made this revelation in an interview with Raymond Nyamador on the Happy Morning Show.

He said, “Some people have gone all the way to changing the expiry dates of products which have expired. A journalist ones informed us about such a scheme in Tudu. We went with the police to the area only to realise the individual had a huge warehouse full of expired products.

The scheme was on such a big scale. The businessman went around buying goods close to expiration and rebranding them for sale. He had a creative guy who did all these for him and adding a year or more to the original expiration dates. The dates were changed so well that you would not notice it if you’re not careful”.

Advising Christmas shoppers on how to notice such schemes, he said, “when you pick up products, check the lettering on the package. When it looks suspicious, don’t purchase them”.

The FDA PRO appealed to citizens to also report any suspicious activities they see amongst shop owners to the police.

On his authority, anyone selling unwholesome products that can cause harm or the death of others will be punished under the law.
