
Former Black Stars forward and Africa Cup of Nations winner, Wilberforce Mfum, has passed away at the age of 88. He died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, May 11, 2025.
His passing was confirmed by the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who described him as not just a football icon but a dear friend.
Mfum’s impact on Ghanaian football was immense. He rose to prominence with Asante Kotoko after joining the club in November 1962 and was a key figure in the national team’s golden era. At the 1963 AFCON, he scored twice in the final against Sudan to help Ghana secure the title on home soil. A year later, he represented Ghana at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
After an illustrious local career, he moved to the United States in 1968 to continue playing, leaving behind a legacy that includes 20 goals in just 26 appearances for the Black Stars.
