The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike starting December 31, 2024.
This decision follows an emergency meeting of CETAG’s National Council on Friday, December 20, 2024, to address what the union describes as the government’s continued failure to fulfill key agreements from previous negotiations.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, CETAG expressed deep frustration over repeated violations of agreements and delays in implementing a compulsory arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on May 2, 2023.
The union accused the government of reneging on commitments made in good faith, which they claim has adversely affected the welfare of their members and the overall education sector.
CETAG previously suspended a strike on August 20, 2024, after receiving assurances from key government officials, including the Vice President, the Minister for Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, and the Minister of Education. These assurances were formalized in an agreement signed on August 19, 2024.
However, CETAG now alleges that the government has failed to honor the terms of that agreement, leaving the union with no choice but to resume industrial action to press for their demands.
The union has called on stakeholders in teacher education, including the Ministry of Education, GTEC, affiliate universities, and the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), to intervene to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar.
CETAG stressed that its leadership has exhausted all diplomatic efforts to resolve the matter and urged immediate action to avoid further complications.
