The Medical director of Healthnet Swan Medical Center, Dr. Dennis Nortey has attributed rampant kidney failures among young people to chemicals used by illegal miners in water bodies.
According to him, the chemicals used by illegal miners in water bodies pose a significant health risk, especially to young people who are experiencing a surge in Kidney failure cases.
In an an interview with Kwadwo Sefah-Danquah on Happy 98.9 FM’s Morning Show, Dr Nortey emphasized that chemicals like zinc and mercury used by illegal miners affect aquatic life.
Some of the chemicals also enter the soil making most of food crops dangerous to consume.
Residents among mining areas who have no other choice than to depend on the same water bodies are also at risk of getting health disorders.
For this reason, foodstuff, vegetables and fishes coming from galamsey prone areas are very harmful for human consumption.
