Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. TONG Defa, has reaffirmed China’s commitment to tackling climate change, stressing that the country is leading the global shift towards clean energy.
Speaking at the Ghana-China Climate Summit 2025 in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, Ambassador Defa reiterated Beijing’s pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, highlighting significant progress made so far.
He noted that China’s renewable energy expansion is transforming the global energy landscape. In 2023, China accounted for more than half of the world’s newly installed renewable energy capacity, while for the first time, renewable generation surpassed thermal power domestically.
“China is now the world’s largest investor in clean energy, and over 90% of new global wind and solar projects in 2024 had lower generation costs than fossil fuels,” he said.
Ambassador Defa further revealed that Chinese clean energy technologies have cut global costs by up to 90%, with Chinese firms responsible for 75% of worldwide clean energy patent applications. By 2035, he projected that China’s clean energy output value will double, generating an estimated ¥15 trillion in economic benefits.
He added that China’s efforts go beyond its borders: “Our wind and solar products are exported to over 200 countries, making renewable and affordable energy accessible to many developing nations, particularly in Africa.”
