Head coach of Ghana’s Black Princesses, Yusif Basigi, believes that abysmal performances by the country’s national teams in major competitions are the result of poor preparations.

There hasn’t been much to celebrate when it comes to Ghana’s performances in major tournaments in the past two years, with the Black Meteors being the latest to be knocked out at the group stage.

After placing third in their group alongside Morocco, Guinea, and Congo, they exited the ongoing 2023 AFCON in Morocco.

However, coach Basigi believes with adequate preparations at the fundamental level, the national teams can also prove a point in major competitions.

“What is important is, we prepare adequately with our youth teams so that transition of these players into the senior national teams would be smooth. These things also take time and proper planning. Especially with women, they are not like the men who can grasp things much quicker so their development take time,” Coach Basigi said in an interview on Happy FM.

He disclosed that Ghana’s Senior National Women’s Football Team, the Black Queens, are preparing adequately ahead the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco 2024.

For the Black Queens, the upcoming tournament holds significant importance as they aim to redeem themselves after a disappointing early exit in the previous edition.

Last year, their hopes were dashed by their arch-rivals, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, in the preliminary stage. The two-legged encounter concluded with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline in favor of the Nigerian side.
