COVID-19 will be over before election 2020 – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

With the numerous speculations about COVID-19 affecting election 2020, the Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has come out to say that the COVID-19 will be over before the elections.

He made this statement on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’.
“There is nothing that points to say that election 2020 will be affected by COVID-19. Looking at projections from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the cases in Ghana, the curve would’ve flattened latest by May or June. We would’ve gone back to normalcy then and it won’t affect our elections,” he said.

According to him, no one has anything to fear and Ghanaians should be rest assured that nothing can be a stumbling block to the 2020 general elections, not even the issue of a new voters register.

He noted that it has been proven by both the coalition of political parties and some relevant Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that the new voters register is not important. “The Electoral Commission (EC) has not been able to prove the importance of the new voters register. They think there is money available to spend, thus the new register which is not needed. Every reasonable person will tell you it is a waste to compile the register”.

On his authority, the EC is basing the need for a new voters register on lies and God will fight anything not in line with the truth. “We are governed by spiritual laws and that is why the coronavirus is here when the EC is about to compile a register based on falsehood.”

The politician went ahead to debunk all claims by the opposition that the compilation of the new register is necessary for the 2020 general elections. He noted that, so far as the old register had been used to conduct the district assembly elections, then it is good enough for the general election.
