A historian, Kweku Darko Ankrah, has revealed that the Guans are the true indigenes of Ghana. Speaking on the Cultural History Month series on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show, he said the first people who were originally living in Gold Coast, now Ghana, were the Guans.
“The Guans were the first group to occupy the Gold Coast. They were called ‘Eti’ and were later joined by other tribes like the Fantis, the Ashantis, the Ga Adangbe and then the Ewes,’’ he said

He also stated that the Guans are segregated into the Coastal Guans, made up of ‘Eguafo, Edinafo, Shama, Efutu, Senya, and Labadi Obutu etc; the Hilly Guans, made up of ‘Larteh, Mampong etc; the third set of Guans are the ones located in the Riverine – that is the newly created Oti Region which is made up of Akpafu, Lolobi, Likpe, Nkonya, Buem, etc, and finally the Northern Hinterland Guans made up of the Gonja, Nawuri, Ntsewuru etc.

However, he disclosed that the Guans were unfortunately swallowed up by the other tribes even though technically they are the true ‘’Landlords” .But now the only distinct Guans who have maintained their heritage are Efutu, Senya, Larteh, Obusumase etc.

The Cultural History Month series on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ is a radio series meant to educate listeners about the origin of our country Ghana.
