Federal investigators have confirmed a major breakthrough in the investigation into the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during a campus event in Utah last Wednesday.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested shortly after the incident at Utah Valley University, where Kirk had been speaking as part of his American Comeback Tour. A bolt-action rifle believed to be the murder weapon was found near the scene, wrapped in a towel. A screwdriver was also recovered from the rooftop where the fatal shot was allegedly fired.
On Monday, FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that DNA recovered from both the towel and the screwdriver matched Robinson, solidifying the case against him. “The DNA hits from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA on the screwdriver are positively processed for the suspect in custody,” Patel told Fox and Friends.
Investigators also discovered forensic traces of a note at Robinson’s residence, which reportedly expressed intent to “take out” Kirk. Although the note had been destroyed, Patel confirmed that forensic analysis revealed its contents were written prior to the shooting.
Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm, according to a Utah County Sheriff’s booking sheet obtained by the BBC. A formal indictment is expected later this week.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that Robinson had initially refused to cooperate with authorities but was persuaded to surrender by his father. Cox also noted that Robinson’s partner, who is believed to be transgender, has been assisting investigators.
In tribute to Kirk, Vice President JD Vance announced he would host Monday’s episode of Kirk’s podcast, honoring his friend and longtime ally of President Trump.
Charlie Kirk rose to prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization. Known for his provocative style and strong online presence, Kirk had been touring college campuses to engage students in political debate when he was tragically killed.
