President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his government is implementing measures to address the power outage threats in the country.

Speaking at the 92nd Annual Jalsa (Convention) of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission at Pomadze in the Central Region on Thursday, January 9, 2024, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges facing his newly inaugurated administration. He explained that resolving the issue of power outages is a key priority.

The President revealed that a postponed shutdown of the West African Gas Pipeline has contributed to the current energy challenges. “A planned shutdown of the West African gas pipeline was supposed to take place in October last year but, at the intervention of this government, it was postponed,” he explained.

He emphasized the urgency of the maintenance work, warning that its execution could lead to temporary power shortages, especially in the eastern part of the country. “This maintenance must be urgently done,” he stated.

President Mahama reassured attendees of his government’s commitment to resolving the crisis. “There’s a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, don’t despair. You elected us to solve the problems, not to shift the blame on anyone else or burden you with these issues.”

To address the looming crisis, the President has convened a meeting with stakeholders from the Institute for Energy Security (IES). A 12-member committee has been formed to devise strategies and implement solutions to mitigate the impact of the anticipated power outages.
