A member of the National Democratic Congress’ communications team, Kweku Banahene has positioned that COVID-19 cases will likely shoot up as people involved in the new voters’ registration are not following health protocols.

In an interview with Kwame Afrifa Mensah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show, he said: “After the registration, our hospitals will be overwhelmed because people are not wearing the mask and social distancing are not being observed”.

He rejected the argument that if people are not allowed to register for fear of COVID-19 then the December polls can also not be held. According to him, the voter’s registration is completely different from the December polls because the former will take many days while the latter will just happen in a day.

“We have advised that this is not the time to compile the new voters register. We have said that let’s use the old voters’ register. When we say that, they argue that the December elections will also not take place if we have this fear. In December, the elections will be just a day. Now we are talking about 38 days. This is the first time we are having the registration in bits, we move after every six days while we have demanded a huge sum of money to organize this election. Where did the money go?”, he queried.

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has started the compilation of a new voter register ahead of the 2020 parliamentary and presidential election. The exercise which was expected to be seamless has recorded a series of challenges over the country.

However information reaching Happy 98.9FM from correspondents around the country have revealed the challenges witnessed in the voter registration exercise which was meant to be smooth.
