The Ministry of Finance has released GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency relief operations and flood mitigation measures following the devastating floods that affected parts of the country after the June 28–29 heavy rains.

The funds were released on the directive of President John Dramani Mahama as part of government’s National Emergency Flood Response Programme to support affected communities and strengthen measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the Controller and Accountant-General established a dedicated National Disaster Management Committee account at the Bank of Ghana into which the full GH¢350 million was transferred.

Of the total amount, GH¢200 million has been earmarked for emergency humanitarian assistance to support flood victims and affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million has been allocated for flood mitigation projects intended to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in vulnerable areas.

The funding forms part of a broader national response activated after severe flooding caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure, particularly in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

Government last week announced a comprehensive post-flood recovery and mitigation programme, including the establishment of a National Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force and five specialised committees to coordinate relief, sanitation, early warning, emergency communications and long-term flood resilience initiatives.

The nationwide recovery programme is being coordinated with the support of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), other security agencies and relevant state institutions.

Government says the intervention is intended to provide immediate support for affected families while investing in infrastructure and mitigation measures aimed at improving Ghana’s preparedness for future flooding.
