A raging fire has destroyed more than 100 shops at the Suame Post Office market in the Ashanti Region.
The blaze started in the early hours of Tuesday and ripped through the market, reducing properties and goods worth millions of cedis to ashes.
Eyewitnesses say gas cylinders stored in some of the shops exploded, fueling the fire and spreading it rapidly.
Traders stood helpless as the flames consumed their shops and wares, while some residents rushed in to break open a few shops and salvage items before the fire spread.
The traders and residents accuse the Fire Service of arriving late, after large portions of the market had already been razed.
One eyewitness told reporters, “We called for help earlier, but the fire service came late. By then, everything was gone.”
The National Fire Service has begun investigations, but no casualties have been recorded.
