A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted former FBI Director James Comey on two charges linked to testimony he gave before Congress.
Comey is accused of lying to a Senate committee in 2020 about whether he had authorised the leak of classified information to the media. The former FBI chief, who has often faced criticism from former President Donald Trump, denied any wrongdoing and expressed confidence in the judicial process.
The indictment follows Trump’s recent call for stronger investigations into his political opponents, including Comey.
In the U.S. legal system, an indictment is a formal accusation by a grand jury that determines whether a case should proceed to trial.
Comey is expected to make his initial court appearance on today, Friday, September 26, while his arraignment has been scheduled for October 9 in Alexandria, Virginia, according to U.S. media reports.
The case is being led by Lindsey Halligan, the newly appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and a former personal lawyer to Trump.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was also pressed by Trump to pursue the case, said the charges demonstrate the Justice Department’s resolve to hold officials accountable for misleading the public.
