The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has asserted that the government is recording significant gains in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), contrary to claims that the situation is deteriorating.
Speaking in an interview in Parliament, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, dismissed suggestions that rising turbidity levels in water bodies alone were enough to conclude that the fight against illegal mining has failed. He stressed that turbidity is only one of several indicators used to assess progress in the galamsey fight.
He challenged critics especially those who claim the situation has worsened under the current government to provide evidence to back their assertions.
On the issue of arresting and prosecuting big names behind illegal mining, the Minister stated that the government is committed to going after the masterminds. He cited the recent actions taken against Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, as an example and cautioned others who may be engaging in similar activities.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu outlined a number of interventions and strategies being implemented by the government to reinforce the battle against illegal mining, noting that these efforts demonstrate clear progress.
Touching on accountability in the use of public funds and issues of breaches in procurement procedures, he assured that the government will not shield offenders. He emphasized that anyone found culpable will face the necessary punitive actions in accordance with the law.
