Traditional leaders in Akyem Nyanoa, in the Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region, have raised alarm over the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey) on the Ayensu River, the main water source for surrounding communities.
At a press briefing, Bafour Kwasi Ahor Arhin, Nifahene of the Akyem Traditional Area, together with other chiefs, described the situation as dire, citing rising health complications linked to the polluted river.
The leaders revealed disturbing reports, including babies being born blind, which they believe is connected to expectant mothers consuming contaminated water.
Residents also voiced their frustration, lamenting the severe hardships caused by the water crisis. Many households are forced to trek long distances in search of potable water or resort to unsafe alternatives, further heightening health risks.
The chiefs and residents are calling on government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to stop galamsey operations along the river and restore the Ayensu to its natural state before the situation worsens.
