The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm directive to heads of basic schools in the Central Region to immediately cease the collection of unauthorised fees from candidates registered for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In a letter dated June 5, 2025, and signed by the Central Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Juliette Dupley-Yami (PhD), the GES expressed concern over reports that some school heads are demanding money from BECE candidates under the pretext of providing allowances to supervisors and invigilators.

The GES condemned the practice as illegal and in direct violation of the Ministry of Education’s guidelines.

The directive warned that any money already collected for such purposes must be refunded in full to affected candidates by Monday, June 9, 2025, or risk severe administrative sanctions.

Heads of schools and teachers found engaging in or authorising such collections have been ordered to halt the practice immediately. The statement further emphasized that only officially assigned supervisors and invigilators are allowed to be present at examination centres.

The regional director also called on all Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to ensure strict compliance and monitor all centres to uphold the credibility of the examination process.
