The Ghana Football Association in collaboration with the Premier League clubs has agreed to introduce penalties in every league game when it ends in a draw in the upcoming season.

This move by the Executive Council is to deal with the worrying trend of national teams and clubs losing out on penalty shootouts during tournaments.

In an interview on Anopa Bosuo Sports on Happy FM, acting Spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association, Tamimu Issah confirmed that there has been a proposal by the Executive Council to introduce penalty shootouts after drawn games in the Ghana Premier League.

“The Executive Council will have a further discussion on the decision to have penalty kicks after a draw game . In the coming days,Executive Council will make a decision as to whether it will be immediate and the modalities involve”.

Ghana has lost out on four major tournaments due to penalty shoot-outs.

The Black Stars lost on penalties to Tunisia in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Black Stars B also lost to Senegal on penalties in the WAFU Cup and the Black Meteors failed to qualify to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic football tournament after losing on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa.

The Executive Council in its proposal indicated that when a league game ends in a draw, it will be followed by a penalty shoot-outs. The winner of the penalty shootout will get two points while the loser takes one point after the drawn game.
