The Ghana Meteorological Agency’s (GMet) Board Chair, Isaac Amoo, has issued a stern warning to staff members, advising them against participating in Organised Labour’s nationwide indefinite strike starting October 10. The strike aims to pressure the government to address rampant illegal mining activities in Ghana’s water bodies and forests.
Isaac Amoo emphasized that GMet, as an essential service provider, cannot afford to have its staff absent themselves from work. He cautioned that any employee who joins the strike does so at their own risk and will be considered dismissed.
This move is likely to spark controversy, especially since GMet staff have previously taken strike action over working conditions.
The strike, called by Organised Labour, seeks to prompt the government into action against galamsey, which has devastated many water bodies and forests. Other unions, including the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), are also participating in the strike.
