Team Ghana delivered another impressive showing on Day Five of the maiden West Africa Zone A and B Para Games in Abeokuta, Nigeria, securing multiple podium finishes across several disciplines.
Ghana’s Sitting Volleyball team made history by winning bronze in their first ever international appearance.
Led by head coach Seidu Ajanako, the squad made up of Rashad Mohammed Rahmat, Faisal Sey, Nfodzo Patrick, Eric Agyekum, Fadiga Mohammed, Christian Asamoah, Fatawu Chambers, Alfred Asiedu Bosu and Christian Fiashide recovered from an earlier loss to Nigeria to claim the country’s first medal in the sport.
In Para Table Tennis, the pair of Abdul Aziz Abbey and Isaac Ampofo added another bronze in the doubles event.
There was success in Para Shooting where Emmanuel Amobire captured gold in the rifle category.
Ghana continued to impress in Wheelchair Basketball, earning silver medals in both the women’s division and the mixed category.
Wheelchair Tennis proved to be one of Ghana’s standout disciplines of the day, producing six medals in total.
Bridget Nartey won bronze in the ladies singles, while Stacy Konadu Mensah secured silver. The two later paired up to take another silver in the ladies doubles.
In the men’s doubles, Daniel Laryea and Bernard Yawson also claimed silver. Laryea then teamed up with Mensah to win bronze in the mixed doubles. Wasila Baba added to the tally with silver in the quad event.
Para Athletics contributed five more medals. Addai Hayford won his second medal of the Games after taking silver in the T46/47 400 metre final with a time of 53.05 seconds. Koffie Bright finished third in 58.05 seconds.
In the T53/54 1500 metre final, Hussien Abdul Gafar earned bronze with a time of 4:41.17.
Veteran athlete Botsyo Nkegbe secured silver in the T53/54 400 metre final, while Kwubetegr Diana added a bronze in the T46/47/38 women’s 400 metre final, clocking 75.28 seconds.
Ghana began the day with 16 medals already confirmed and matched that tally once again to bring the total to 32 medals so far.
