The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government is working to extend the student loan scheme to cover students in private tertiary institutions.

This move aims to provide significant relief to students who face financial challenges in accessing higher education.

During the inauguration of the new Board for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in Accra on April 25, Haruna Iddrisu stated that the government is considering expanding the student loan scheme to include all deserving students, regardless of whether they attend public or private institutions.

He mentioned that a physical assessment is currently being conducted to evaluate the feasibility of this expansion.

Once the assessment is completed, he noted a decision will be made, emphasizing that the loan will be repaid.

Additionally, the Minister revealed plans to introduce a new scholarship bill that aligns educational support with the country’s long-term development goals.

Mr. Iddrisu also stressed the importance of focusing on Science, Mathematics, and Engineering education, noting that the aim is to train the country’s best minds in these fields and provide comprehensive support through the new scholarship scheme.

These measures, according to him, are part of a broader strategy to improve access to higher education and promote national development through targeted investment in key academic areas.
