The Government of Ghana has declared every Wednesday as a national day for the wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to preserve and promote the country’s cultural heritage.
The declaration was announced by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in a statement dated February 10, 2026, and signed by the Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP).
According to the ministry, the initiative encourages all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana both at home and abroad, to dedicate Wednesdays to wearing Fugu in its various forms, designs and expressions, complemented by its distinctive accessories.
The ministry explained that the move is aimed at deepening national cultural awareness, affirming Ghana’s identity and projecting the country’s rich heritage to the global community.
Beyond its cultural significance, the statement noted that the initiative is expected to generate wide-ranging social and economic benefits, including the empowerment of local weavers, designers, artisans and traders across the value chain.
It is also anticipated to expand business opportunities, boost employment and stimulate commercial activities nationwide.
The government further expressed hope that the collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
