The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has moved to ease tensions at Accra’s CMB trading hub, assuring traders and transport unions that they will not be displaced following protests over an alleged private takeover of the land.
GRDA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frederick Appoh, emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting livelihoods and maintaining order at the busy hub.
“I want to reassure the public and market women, we’re not going to move anybody from there. As part of our initiatives as a government, we will address every issue there,” he said.
Dr. Appoh clarified that under the current administration, only two leases have been issued, none of which involve private developers attempting to evict traders.
“No lease has been given to any private developer under this administration, which is asking our sisters, our mothers, to move from there,” he stressed.
He further disclosed plans for a stakeholder agreement involving the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Klottey-Korle MP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Accra Mayor, and market leaders to resolve the concerns.
“I’m confident that the issue will be resolved,” Dr. Appoh added.
The assurance comes after traders and transport unions, who have operated at the CMB hub for over three decades, petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.
