Ghana’s rising para-athletics sensation Hayford Addai delivered an outstanding performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, producing a lifetime best of 10.99 seconds to finish fifth in the fiercely contested Men’s 100m T47 final.
The 17-year-old sprinter entered the championship with a personal and season’s best of 11.09 seconds, but rose to the occasion on one of the biggest stages in para-sport by slicing 0.10 seconds off his previous mark and becoming the first Ghanaian T47 sprinter to officially break the 11-second barrier.
The race was won by India’s Dilip Mahadu Gavit, with compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath claiming silver to complete an impressive Indian one-two finish, while England’s Kevin Santos secured the bronze medal.
Although Addai narrowly missed out on a place on the podium, his performance has been widely hailed as one of Ghana’s brightest moments of the Games. Competing at his first Commonwealth Games, the young sprinter demonstrated remarkable composure and determination against an elite international field.
Addai’s progress over the past year has been exceptional. Earlier this season, he captured gold at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai with a time of 11.09 seconds before continuing his impressive form with another gold-medal performance in Rabat to qualify for Glasgow. His latest performance confirms his rapid development into one of Africa’s most promising para-athletes.
His performance is expected to provide a major confidence boost as he prepares for future international competitions, including the World Para Athletics Championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana praised Addai’s determination, noting that his new personal best reflects the rewards of discipline, consistent preparation and growing international experience. His achievement also reinforces Ghana’s increasing competitiveness in global para-athletics.
While the medals may have eluded him in Glasgow, Hayford Addai leaves Scotland with something equally significant—a new personal best, a historic sub-11-second performance, and the promise of an even brighter future for Ghanaian para-sport.
