I almost died playing for the Black Stars - Joetex

Former Ghanaian international player, Joetex Asamoah-Frimpong, has revealed he almost died playing for the Black Stars in the 2006 World Cup qualification match in Kumasi.

The incident, Joetex explained, happened during Ghana’s World Cup qualification match against Uganda in Kumasi, where the Black Stars emerged victorious defeating the Ugandans 2-0.

“Because of the World Cup, I almost died in Kumasi, it was in Ghana’s WC qualifier against Uganda. Micheal Essien made an intelligent pass to me and I was just one on one with the goalie. I lofted the ball over the goalie and he jumped stamping his foot in my lower ribs. To date, the bone is swollen. I was rushed to the hospital after the incident. This was because of the World Cup and I was still snubbed,” Joetex recounted in an interview on eTVGhana’s The Conversation with Ohene Bampoe Brenya.

Joetex Asamoah-Frimpong made his Black Stars debut against Burkina Faso in a World Cup qualifier in Ghana.

However, he missed out on the chance to play in the country’s maiden FIFA World Cup tournament in Germany.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup was a significant moment for Ghana, marking the country’s first-ever appearance in the prestigious tournament.

Although the Black Stars achieved an impressive performance, reaching the round of 16 before being eliminated by Brazil, Joetex’s absence left a void in the hearts of fans who believed he deserved to be part of the historic campaign.
