The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has rejected suggestions that he is unhappy or dissatisfied with his appointment to head the Education Ministry, stating that he is ready to take on the challenges confronting Ghana’s education sector and help reposition it for the future.
Speaking in an interview with an Accra based television station, Mr. Iddrisu said his appointment was a strategic decision by President John Dramani Mahama, following extensive consultations, and forms part of efforts to reset the country’s education system.
“I’m sure President Mahama thoroughly engaged and consulted before the decision to send me to the Ministry of Education, probably to help him reset Ghana’s education sector, which undoubtedly faces enormous challenges, from Kindergarten, Basic Education through Primary, Junior High School, Secondary Education to Tertiary Education,” he said.
The Education Minister admitted that the sector is grappling with long-standing problems at all levels, from basic education through to secondary school, and emphasized the need for decisive action to address them.
He stressed that in his one year in office as Minister of Education, he has not disappointed President Mahama and will not do so, assuring that he remains committed to working diligently to achieve the President’s education sector reset agenda.
“I have not disappointed him in the last one year, and I shall Not, and we will review and reform Ghana’s education generally, in order that we would produce competences that can stand the 21st Century,” he added.
