Former Vice president and Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, 2024 general elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has denied claims of being behind the never ending Bawku conflict.

According to him, it is rather unfortunate that he was accused of supporting his tribesmen, the Mamprusis with guns to be used against the Kusasi ethnic group, resulting in the escalation of the Bawku conflict.

Addressing supporters of the NPP during the party’s ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’, he said, “I hope you all heard what was said about me in the Bawku problem, (I mean) the conflict between between the Kusasi and Mamprusis fighting in Bawku. I hope you heard about that. When that thing happened, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) saw it as an opportunity to lie against me. They went about saying I am the one buying guns for the Mamprusis to attack the Kusasis.”

Dr. Bawumia expressed shock over how the lie was bought hook, line and sinker by most Ghanaians which left him both surprised and confused.

He revealed the NDC managed to use this lie to poll some 39,000 votes in all the constituencies in Bawku, beating the NPP.

“But today, everyone in Bawku has come to know that the NDC came to deceive them as far as the Bawku conflict is concerned. They deceived them and the people of Bawku have come to know the truth. As we speak today the NDC MP’s cannot even go to Bawku.”

There have been several casualties, including the killing of children and families in the ongoing conflict in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

Despite all efforts by security forces to end the unrest and safeguard commuters, armed assailants continue to unleash deadly attacks, deepening fear and uncertainty among residents and travelers in the region.
