Executive Secretary of the IMCC on Decentralization, Dr. Gameli Dominic Kewuribe Hoedoafia has called for deeper media engagements with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives for efficient tracking of local development.
In an engagement with the media at the Office of the Head of Local Governance in Accra, Dr. Hoedoafia highlighted the need for effective coverage of decentralization and local government and the progress being made by the appointed officials to boost development in the localities nationwide.
The IMCCoD official indicated that all levels of governance have appointed individuals who handle the day to day activities of that area. “The issues of sanitation, urban planning, housing always come up in national conversations but every time when the matters come up, we see that the media is always going to the ministers but now we need to work together and change the narrative, lets set the spotlight on these District Chief Executives,”
He further emphasized that all proceedings observed at the higher levels of government are practiced at the local level under similar procedures from deliberation to execution with approval from Parliament. “Let us remember that what we have at the central area and the higher level of governance is mirrored at the local level as well so we have parliament happening right there at the local level.” he shared.
The Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization remains the country’s key institutional body responsible for coordinating decentralization policy and strengthening Ghana’s decentralized local governance system through reforms and inter-sectoral collaboration.
