A joint anti-galamsey operation on September 17, 2025, led to the destruction of several illegal mining sites along the River Ankobra in the Western Region.

The exercise was carried out by the NAIMOS Task Force in collaboration with the Western Regional Security Council, Western Naval Command, and the Nzema East Blue Water Guards. The operation covered communities stretching from Dwira Ashem through Dominase to Akango in the Nzema East Municipality.

According to the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who shared an update on Facebook, the raid targeted mining activities both on the river and along its banks.

In total, security personnel destroyed 20 makeshift structures, 10 dredging platforms, and 20 chanfangs, while seizing equipment including 15 pumping machines, 4 motorbikes, 2 solar panels, a television set, a standing fan, and 3 gas cylinders.

Authorities say the coordinated action forms part of an ongoing effort to clamp down on galamsey and restore the Ankobra River’s ecosystem.
