Highlife musician Nana Yaw Kumi, popularly known as Kumi Guitar has said that he started off as a taxi driver.
Kumi’s humble beginnings started as part of a melodious group in Adisadel College at a tender age. His burst onto the professional scene was triggered by a musical collaboration with another musician on Sugar Tone’s compilation.
In an interview on the Delay show he said, “I felt that as a man, you have to survive. After senior high school I had other siblings who were yet to complete.”
“Not to say my father couldn’t take care of any of us but I did so not add more pressure. I felt like a man at an early age.”
“Moreover you could always get GH¢10 or GH¢5 to save after making your sales.”
He further disclosed that he wanted to be banker so he studied while he doubled as a taxi driver.
“I wanted to be a banker so I went Chartered Institute of Bankers when I was still a taxi driver, combining the two was hard.”
His hit single ‘Break into two’ which featured Guru got him nominated for New Artiste of the Year in the 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards under Slip Music Records.
