Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in his ability to address the rising food prices and economic challenges facing Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, September 22, 2024, he assured Ghanaians that he has a clear plan to tackle the daily increases in food prices that have burdened households across the nation.

Mr. Mahama attributed the escalating costs of food and basic commodities to poor economic management by the current government, emphasizing the need for immediate and decisive interventions. He highlighted that his previous experience as President has equipped him with the knowledge necessary to reverse the current economic downturn and stabilize the food market.

He vowed to eliminate what he terned six draconian taxes, including the E-Levy, Covid levy, 10% tax on betting winnings, and the emissions levy, among others.
Mr. Mahama also pledged to reform the unjust VAT system that is straining both the population and businesses. He intends to apply the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy on fuel, introduce a special pension scheme for informal sector workers, and implement a $10 billion “Big Push” policy for strategic infrastructural development.

Mr. Mahama urged Ghanaians to support the NDC in the upcoming 2024 elections, stating that the party’s vision is rooted in achieving economic stability and equitable growth. He assured that his leadership would bring about reforms to halt the daily price hikes and provide relief to struggling families, as outlined in the ‘Resetting Ghana Manifesto.’
