Medeama SC clarifies home venue for CAF Champions League

In response to recent reports circulating in the local media, Medeama SC, the reigning Ghanaian champions, has issued a press release to clarify their choice of home venue for the upcoming CAF Champions League games. Contrary to the rumors, the club has not selected the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi as their home ground.

Medeama’s official statement reads, “We would like to inform our loyal supporters and the sports community that Medeama Sporting Club has not designated the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi as its home venue for the group stage of the 2023-24 CAF Champions League. The club’s primary choice is the T and A Stadium in Tarkwa, pending inspection and approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).”

Regarding the speculation about using both the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Cape Coast Stadium, the Yellow and Mauve clarified, “The only two approved venues for the group phase of the CAF inter-club competition are the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Cape Coast Stadium. These venues are being considered along with the newly constructed T and A Stadium in Tarkwa. A final decision on the permanent venue for the group stage will be made shortly.”

Medeama’s journey to the group stage of the CAF Champions League has been remarkable, marking their maiden appearance in the competition. They earned their spot by defeating Remo Stars and Horoya AC in the preliminary rounds.

In Group D of the competition, Medeama will face stiff competition from defending champions Al Ahly SC, Algerian champions CR Belouizdad, and Tanzanian giants Young Africans. Their group stage campaign will commence with an away fixture against Al Ahly in Cairo, followed by a home match against Belouizdad, which may take place at the Baba Yara Stadium. Subsequent home games will see them clash with Young Africans and Al Ahly.

The CAF Champions League group stage matches are scheduled to kick off on Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26, 2023, with the competition concluding on March 1 and 2, 2024.
