Meghan Markle to run for US president - biographer claims

Meghan Markle could make a run for the US presidency within a decade, her biographer has claimed.

In a column, Tom Bower, who is writing a royal biography about the Duchess of Sussex, said he believes the former actress’s next steps are to conquer the US – and then the world.

He asked: “And what about the next 40 years? Once Harry has finished promoting his books, will Meghan launch her own global campaign to engage in the swirling muck of American politics?”

The opinion piece comes ahead of Meghan’s 40th birthday celebrations on Wednesday which will reportedly be a small gathering with about 65 people invited.

Writing for The Sun, Mr Bower asked if after she ‘seduced’ the Royal Family whether she would be tempted to promote her own ‘political ambitions’ through a friendship with America’s vice-president Kamala Harris and the Obamas.

He said becoming president could be a way of her to continue her “Crusade for ­Goodness”.

Mr Bower continued: “With the support of Democrat godfathers the Clintons and the Obamas, Meghan should have little difficulty getting ­nominated as one of the state’s 40 Congressmen sent to Washington.”a close up of a woman: Meghan Markle© Getty Images Meghan Markle

He described her theoretical bid for the top job as making her “a strong runner” and said to achieve that goal would need “a lot of learning, endless travel and an iron constitution”.

He added: “Meghan certainly has the guts and self-belief to fight to the top of the greasy pole. The question is whether she has the stamina.”

A friend of the Duchess told Vanity Fair magazine last year that a reason she did not give up her American citizenship when she married Prince Harry was to keep open the option of entering US politics.

Meanwhile, for the birthday bash the mum-of-two has reportedly hired Colin Cowie, Oprah Winfrey’s party planner, for a celebration next week at her and Prince Harry ’s £11million mansion in Santa Barbara, California.

It is expected to be a low-key affair on their sprawling property with enough privacy to entertain their guests with food and drink sourced from local businesses.

A source said: “Megan wants a small gathering. About 65 people are invited, including her closest friends and family. Colin was recommended to her by Oprah who always puts on fabulous parties.”

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, believes the party would be at their mansion rather than somewhere in the public eye.

The Sun reports the royal expert as saying: “But it will perhaps be at home rather than in a restaurant – as they have wonderful grounds in which to give a party, and as they are intent on their privacy it would be inviting trouble to have it in a public venue.”

She added that Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King are likely to be two famous pals that would attend.

The Duchess’ past birthdays have been marked in very different ways.

For Meghan’s 36th, she and her husband went to Botswana to carry out conservation work with the charity Elephants Without Borders.

Meghan celebrated her 37th birthday – her first as a Duchess – while she attended the wedding of Prince Harry’s friends Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks.

On her next birthday, the Duke shared a post on their now-inactive Sussex Royal Instagram of Meghan from their royal tour of Tonga.
