The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, says the government will soon present the National Misinformation and Disinformation Bill to Parliament.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, July 3, the Minister confirmed that the long-awaited draft legislation is ready and will go before Parliament in its next sitting.
He explained that the bill aims to protect Ghana’s digital space from the deliberate spread of false information, which he says threatens public trust, national security, and democratic engagement.
Mr. George noted that the bill provides a clear legal framework to empower regulatory bodies to take action against misinformation, while still respecting citizens’ right to free speech.
He assured the public that the law will not suppress freedom of expression but will instead promote responsible communication.
According to him, the legislation will strengthen digital accountability, improve public discourse, and boost media literacy.
He stressed, “We will not clamp down on free speech. But when your right to speak ends, your duty not to mislead begins.”
